Season Recap: Girls Tennis
Lady Indians make program history with first State Runner-Up finish
An incredibly talented and driven group of seniors helped the Lady Indians to soar this year to a program first in a State Runner-Up finish. Five seniors dominated the record books and opponents alike throughout the spring, carving out an unforgettable season.
All told, the Lady Indians went 14-6 on their way to a state title match, beating #2-ranked Brookstone in the semifinals. Coach Anthony Cox etched a tough regular season schedule to prepare for the toughest matches at the end of the year. It paid off.
TFS garnered a fourth consecutive region title while going 5-0 in region matches. Throughout the duration of the season, the girls dominated with 11 shutout wins, and won the first 10 matches of the season overall.
Singles star Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph, who signed to continue her career at Barton College, entered the season already owning the single-season and career wins record. She put those numbers far out of reach with a new school record of 24 wins this year and 75 for her career.
Fellow senior and 2-singles star Azaria Junaid posted 19 wins, and ends her career with 52 singles wins (2nd-most). Meanwhile, the 1-doubles combo of Ava Carnes and Charlotte Stafford gelled together for a third straight season, going 20-4 overall. That set a new single-season doubles combo record, and career mark with 48 wins together.
Carnes' 64 career wins (56 at doubles - most in school history) is second only to Daniel-Joseph in total victories. Stafford closed with 53 wins (all at doubles), sitting fourth all-time. Carnes and Stafford's partnership resulted in being the State Runner-Up at doubles and also winning the Doubles Region Championship. Daniel-Joseph was also the Region Champion for a second straight year, and was the State Runner-Up at singles.
Doubles standout Keira Webb also came up with 11 wins at doubles and four at singles on the season, ending her career with 46 total wins (5th-most). Therefore, the top-five win totals in girls tennis history were the five seniors on this year's team. Behind them, Madison Phillips, a junior, played well with five singles wins and 12 doubles wins. Malwina Mroczek (14 total wins), Catherine Harris, and Lilli Whittle all contributed as well this year.
"Our five senior girls have left an unmistakable mark on our tennis program," says Cox, who reached 100 career victories during the season. "Fourth straight region championships, undefeated in the regular season through 3 1/2 years, finishes in the Elite 8, Sweet 16, Final 4, and State Runner-Up. What an unbelievable run these girls have had. They have all been with our school and tennis program at least four years, and over that time they have pushed each other to reach their highest potential. Because of their leadership over the years, we named all five of them captains for the tennis team this year. Their contributions were great, and they will be sorely missed in the years to come. However, they have set an example of what it means to represent a school and an athletic program and what it takes to perform with excellence."
